N.Wales July News
Sunday 12th was the Candles Charity Run, organised by West Cheshire M.G.O.C. It was an early start, and we went via Joan's house to follow her and her niece, who acted as driver in the Midget for this run. The starting point was Bellis Bros. Garden Centre in Holt, as last year, and on arrival the weather was so nice that roofs were dropped down. The run was 84 miles in total through some lovely countryside, stopping at Alderford Lake for a lunch break and finishing up at Erddig. The route plans were first-class, and sponsored by a local company:- the cost of entering this event went to the M.S. Society, (the Vale Royal and West Cheshire Branch), and Northern Lights Childrens Charity, plus any following donations and including monies taken on the day by the raffle, etc. Also good to note that the rally plaques are sponsored by an insurance company, everything helps to raise funds for the chosen charities. The weather stayed very kind throughout the day, so yet again we all had another really enjoyable time. As we arrived home we had travelled a total of 121 miles that day, so felt quite wacked out.
On Saturday 18th we attended the Weaver Wander, an event organised by the Rotary Club of Crewe & Nantwich. The Mayor of Nantwich, ably assisted by Fuzz Townsend, flagged off 156 cars from Nantwich Football Club, which was the meeting point for refreshments and the collection of route plans. A vast assortment of different cars, plus some old motorcycles, took part in this run. We all set off in stages, and the route of over 70 miles covered some smashing countryside, finishing at Hankelow Hall, where we all settled down for lunch. Another enjoyable day in great company.
Sunday 26th was the Bala Lake Festival of Transport, and that meant another early start to meet more of our Chester & Wrexham group at the Rhug Estate, where we had time to have a coffee before going on to Bala. There were showers on the way, then as we all parked up the rain increased and did not ease until late in the afternoon:- this somewhat spoiled the show, but when the sun came out in the afternoon this made it better, allowing our friends to get the chairs out and really get together to have a chat and a flipping good laugh. We decided to go home via the Berwyns, taking in moorland, hills and forestry, really stunning scenery. A road that we have not travelled for some time, so we had forgotten how beautiful the area is.
On the 28th May thirty of our group met at the Moreton Garden Centre in Chirk for the monthly OFFAL run, this time organised by M.G. Pete and Alison. Morning refreshments taken, and with the route plans handed out, we all set off on a smashing run, ending up at the Cock O'Barton pub for our pre-ordered lunches. As we have said before, the noise level is very high with all the chat and laughter, but when the food arrives things certainly go much quieter! Another lovely day with good food and company.
The following day was very sad, as it was Bob Whiting's funeral. We picked Joan up, and met Julia and Spitfire Sam at Dobshill, then travelled up to Colwyn Bay to meet up with others of our Chester & Wrexham friends. After the service everyone went back to Bob's local pub for refreshments and to remember him. He was one of the founder members of our group, a real gentleman, and will be greatly missed.
Thursday 30th May was the Families Day at R.A.F. Shawbury, so another early start. We met Julia and Alan, M.G. Joan and M.G. Glen and Barry in Ellesmere, and then went on to Shawbury. Upon arrival Joan was having trouble with her Midget, as she was having difficulties getting the gears, so Roger drove the car onto the airbase. The weather was quite windy, so the parachute display could not take place, but the rest of the air show went on as normal, including a Spitfire which was so wonderful to see and hear. The day was very overcast for the most, with a wind-chill factor, but the sun did come out eventually. The journey home was interesting, as Roger said he would drive Joan's Midget back and bring it home to put it up on the ramps, but we had a diversion due to a road being closed, and this took us down to the outskirts of Shrewsbury before heading us back in the direction that we needed to go:- not good at the best of times, but when you have a car that is not driving as it should this is not something that you want! Roger's hip and left ankle had suffered by the time we reached home, but well done to him for getting the car back. The next day he stripped the clutch cylinder, fetched the parts from Welsh M.G. in Rhostellyn, and after lunch the Midget was back in action.
