Devon’s first ever ‘Run to the Suns’ brilliantly organised by Rob Lingard on 6 July saw a huge turnout of Triumphs. Starting at Sunrise at Haytor, via Dartmoor to breakfast at Ullacombe Farm. Onwards to Tiverton Castle for a private tour, a break in the afternoon. Re-gathering at Teignmouth for Sunset! A fabulous day and a brilliant idea by Rob. A front page spread in the August Courier too! The 50th running of the Powderham Historic Gathering ran on one of the hottest weekends, but we were lucky to have a little breeze from the estuary. With Shane taking the entries, and Dave & team organising the stand, it was a doddle for us just to spend two days talking to members, prospective members and friends Lilian and Morton from Denmark. I had time to do insurance valuations on seven cars plus another on Club Night. Members came from Gloucestershire and Wales as well as our usual crew. A total of 27 lovely cars – all models from John M’s lovely Mayflower to the Partridge’s two Acclaims featured. One of the stars was Angela’s head turning 1500 Spitfire in Russett, recently completely restored by Darren. It was her 21st birthday gift and possibly now looks better than then. Two Herald Estates, Rob’s and Colin’s, Heralds, Vitesses, Stag, 2000 Estate and some TR6’s. A fantastic display of Triumphs once again. Our neighbours the Anglia 105E Club had a very rare car with more than a passing resemblance in the rear to a Toledo. A LHD Anglia Torino, designed by Michelotti – a very interesting exhibit. Close on Powderham came July Club Night. Defying the forecast, we had 12 assorted cars on display. The pub was bursting at the seams with members. 3 Stags out, including Mike & Jackie’s from Wellington, a nice run down the M5, and Martin’s lovely early one on a J plate, along with John R’s. All very different. Lots of chat in the car park, and a delight to see another very early member, Paul Johns, who is restoring a Triumph amongst his collection of Eastern Bloc cars. At the end of July, we joined many North Devon members at RHS Rosemoor where Darren Groves had organised a TSSC area for the Club on the Saturday. A nice run up with the Stag. Several members from the South made it, including Peter with his lovely low mileage TR7, Maurice & Mary’s 1500 TC and John L’s 1500 Spitfire. A lovely day out but yet again we did not make it as far as the garden itself! A couple of members also made it there on the Sunday.
